An old man said to his wife, "Bake me a bun." The woman swept the storeroom, gathered a handful of flour, kneaded a round bun, baked it in the oven and put it on the windowsill to cool. The bun's name was Kolobok.
Kolobok got bored on the windowsill. He rolled; from the windowsill into the yard, from the yard onto the road, from the road into the forest. On and on he rolled.
A hare appeared in front of him: "Kolobok, I'm going to eat you!" Kolobok said, "First listen to my song," and sang: "I am Kolobok, I was swept from the storeroom, I was baked in the oven, I ran from the windowsill, and I'll run from you too!" And he rolled away.
A wolf appeared; the same song, the same escape. A bear appeared; the same song, the same escape. Kolobok began to think himself very clever.
Then a fox appeared. "What a lovely bun, what a lovely song!" said the fox. "But I am old, and I can't hear well. Climb up onto my nose and sing it once more." Kolobok proudly climbed onto the fox's nose and began his song: "I am Kolobok, from the storeroom..." Snap! The fox swallowed him.
Russian grandmothers end this tale for their children like this: whoever falls for flattery ends up on the fox's nose. May nobody climb onto your nose; now sleep.
The tale ends here. Sleep well.
