A farmer found an eagle in his field; its foot was caught in a trap. The farmer took pity on the eagle, opened the trap and set it free. The eagle rose into the air, circled once and flew away.

Days later, in the midday heat, the farmer sat resting at the foot of an old stone wall. The wall had been neglected for years and its stones were loose, but the farmer did not notice.

Suddenly a shadow swept down from the sky. The eagle! It snatched the hat from the farmer's head and flew off. The farmer was angry: "Hey, I saved you, and you steal my hat?" He got up and ran after the eagle. A little way ahead, the eagle dropped the hat on the ground.

The moment the farmer picked up the hat, a great crash sounded behind him. He turned and looked: the wall he had been sitting against had collapsed, and the stones lay piled exactly where he had been sitting.

The farmer pressed his hat to his chest and looked up at the sky. The eagle was circling overhead. "You saved me," whispered the farmer. "Not my hat. Me."

A good deed has wings; one day it comes back and lifts you away from the foot of the wall.
