A young goat wandered away from the flock and climbed onto the roof of a barn. From there he could see everything. Below, a wolf was passing by.
The kid grew bold. He shouted from the roof: "Hey, wolf! You coward, you thief! Come up here and let's see what you'll do!"
The wolf lifted his head, looked at the kid and answered calmly: "Little goat, it is not you who insults me. It is the roof you are standing on."
And he went on his way.
The kid was quiet for a moment. When he came down from the roof, his voice got smaller too; he went back to his flock and told his mother what had happened. His mother said, "My child, not everyone who stands up high is brave. Courage is being able to say the same words when you are down below."
The little goat never forgot this. He never shouted at anyone from a roof again. But one day, when a wolf attacked the flock, he stood straight and tall beside his mother. That was the day he was truly brave.
