An old rooster had perched on a high branch early in the morning, waiting for the sun to rise. Just then a fox called up from below.
"Brother Rooster! Good news, good news! Haven't you heard? Peace has been declared in the forest. From now on no animal will eat any other animal. Foxes are friends with hens, wolves with lambs. Come down so we can celebrate this wonderful day together, let me give you a hug!"
The rooster looked at the fox. The fox's eyes were gleaming, and his tongue was licking his lips. The rooster smiled, but he did not come down.
"What wonderful news, Brother Fox!" he said. "I am truly glad. And look, you're not the only one bringing this news. Over there, two big hounds are running toward us from the hill. They must be coming to celebrate the peace as well. Wait, and we'll all hug each other together!"
When the fox heard this, the color drained from his face. "Hounds? Which hounds?" Without even looking back, he bolted for the forest. "I... I'm in a hurry! We'll celebrate the peace another day!" he shouted as he ran.
The rooster chuckled on his branch. There were no hounds at all. He had understood the fox's game and played one of his own.
Then he puffed out his chest and announced the morning to the whole village: "Cock-a-doodle-doo! Cunning deserves cunning, and no rooster falls for a fox!"
