You brought a shell back from the sea in summer, do you remember? Big, spiral, pink inside. When you held it to your ear, you heard the sound of the sea. Shhhh... shhhh...

Grown-ups say that this sound is the sound of your own blood. Maybe. But a shell says more than that too.

Hold the shell to your ear. Listen.

Shhhh... That is the wave breaking on the sand. A small wave; it won't hurt you. It comes, it goes.

Shhhh... That is the wind blowing along the beach. It won't blow your hat off; it only strokes your hair.

Shhhh... That is the sound of a ship far away. There is a captain on the ship; he is going to sleep now too.

Shhhh... That is the whisper of the fish at the bottom of the sea. They sleep too; with their eyes open, but they sleep.

Shhhh... That is the turning of the lighthouse. The light goes on and off. On... off... on... off...

The shell always says the same thing. It said it in summer, it says it now, and it will say it in winter: "The sea is here. The sea is calm. You be calm too."

Put the shell beside your pillow. Put your hand on it. Shhhh... shhhh...

The sea is rocking you to sleep.

The tale ends here. Sleep well.
