A farm dog kept watch at the gate; that was his job. One day he saw the neighbor's sheepdog: with a single whistle it gathered hundreds of sheep and brought them down from the mountain. "What great work!" he said. Then he saw the cart dog on the road to market: it was pulling a big cart full of milk. "What great strength!"

In the evening he went to his master. "Let me herd sheep too, let me pull carts, let me dig for treasure! What is standing at the gate, anyway?"

The farmer smiled. The next morning he put the dog in charge of the sheep. The dog did not understand the whistle, and the sheep scattered. Then he ran to the cart; the cart did not budge, and the dog's tongue hung out a foot. Then he dug for treasure in the field; he found mud and three bones.

In the evening the dog came back to the gate, tired, and lay down. In the night a fox crept up to the henhouse. The dog sprang up, barked and chased the fox away. The hens were saved.

In the morning the farmer stroked him: "Did you see? The sheepdog wouldn't have seen the fox, the cart dog would have been asleep, the treasure dog would have been far away. You were at the gate. Everyone has a job; yours is at least as important as theirs."

The dog wagged his tail. To this day he lies at the gate with pride; sometimes he looks at the neighbor's sheep, but he does not envy them.
