Two mules were walking side by side along a mountain road. One carried sacks full of gold on his back, the other carried oats. The mule with the gold held his head high, jingled his bells and stamped his hooves. "I carry a precious load," he said. "You only carry oats. How boring!"

The mule with the oats shrugged: "Oats are needed too."

At the bend in the mountain, robbers lay in ambush. They heard the sound of the gold. They sprang out and attacked the mule with the gold and took the sacks. The mule was wounded and fell to the ground. Nobody even looked at the mule with the oats; he went on his way.

The mule with the gold groaned and called out: "Brother, so this is what carrying a precious load means. I wish I had carried oats too."

The mule with the oats turned back and helped him: "The value of the load belongs to its owner. All that is left to us is its weight and its danger. Don't jingle your bells so loudly again."

The two of them went back to the village together. From that day on the mule with the gold walked quietly; and the mule with the oats stayed just the same.
