On a farm there lived a little red hen. One day she found a grain of wheat on the ground. "Who will sow this wheat?" she asked. The cat said, "Not I." The dog said, "Not I." The duck said, "Not I." "Then I will sow it," said the hen, and she did.

The wheat grew and turned golden. "Who will reap this wheat?" "Not I!" "Not I!" "Not I!" "Then I will reap it." She reaped it.

"Who will take it to the mill?" Again nobody. The hen took it and had it ground into flour. "Who will bake the bread?" Again nobody. The hen kneaded the dough and put it in the oven. The lovely smell of bread spread over the whole farm.

The hen asked: "Who will eat this bread?" The cat said, "I will!" The dog said, "I will!" The duck said, "I will!"

The little red hen shook her head. "No. Whoever did not sow, did not reap and did not knead does not eat. I will eat this bread with my chicks." And so she did.

That evening the cat, the dog and the duck thought things over on empty stomachs. The next spring the hen found another grain of wheat and asked: "Who will sow it?" All three shouted at once: "I will!" That year there was four times as much bread, and everyone had enough.
