When night comes, the forest sleeps. Rabbits, squirrels, deer, hedgehogs... All in their nests. But two animals are awake: the owl and the bat.

One night they landed on the same branch. The owl said, "I watch over the forest." The bat said, "So do I." "Then how do we share it?" asked the owl.

"You look with your eyes," said the bat, "and I listen with my ears."

The owl looked: the fox's den calm, the stream shining, the wolf far away and asleep. "Everything in its place."

The bat listened: the wind light, no rustle of dry leaves, nobody coming. "Everything quiet."

"And what if something happens?" said the owl.

"I'll warn you, and you hoot. The whole forest hears."

"And if nothing happens?"

"Then we wait until morning, and when the sun comes we sleep. It's the sun's turn."

The owl was pleased. They sat side by side on the branch. The moon wandered, the stars turned, the forest slept soundly. Nothing happened; most nights nothing happens.

In the morning the sun came up. The owl went into its hollow, the bat into its cave. The sun said, "I'm here, you sleep."

In your forest too, someone is awake. Maybe an owl, maybe a bat, maybe your mother. One is looking, one is listening. You sleep.

The tale ends here. Sleep well.
