Once upon a time there was a little girl whose mother and father had died. She was so poor that she had no little room to live in and no little bed to sleep in. She had nothing but the clothes on her back and a piece of bread that a kind-hearted person had given her. But she was good and pious. And because the whole world had abandoned her, she went out into the fields, trusting in God.
On the way a poor man came up to her: "Oh, give me something to eat. I'm so hungry." She handed him her whole piece of bread: "May God bless it for you," she said, and walked on.
A little later a child came along crying: "My head is so cold. Give me something to cover it." The girl took off her little cap and gave it to the child.
When she had gone a little further, she met a child who had no jacket and was shivering with cold. The girl took off her own jacket and put it on the child. A little further on, a child asked for her skirt, and she gave that away too.
At last she came to a forest. It had already grown dark. In the forest yet another child came and asked for a little shirt. The good girl thought: "It's a dark night, and nobody will see me. I can give away my shirt too." And she took off her shirt and gave it to that child as well.
As she stood there in the middle of the forest, all alone, with nothing left at all, the stars in the sky suddenly began to fall. When they reached the ground, they turned into hard, shining coins of pure gold. And although she had given away her shirt, she found herself wearing a brand-new one, made of the finest linen.
The girl gathered the gold coins that fell from the sky into the hem of her new shirt. There were so many that she was never poor again for the rest of her life. But still, every single day, she never forgot to give a little of what she had to the poor people she met along the way.
This tale tells us: nothing given from the heart is ever lost; one day it comes back like stars falling from the sky. Tonight, look at the stars from your window. Perhaps one of them is waiting to fall into the lap of a kind-hearted child.
The tale ends here. Sleep well.
