Piril, the smallest star in the sky, shone at night and slept in the daytime. All stars are like that. But one morning Piril said, "I'm not going to sleep. I want to see the day."
The sun rose. The sky turned blue. Piril tried to keep its eyes open. But the sun was so bright that Piril's light became invisible. Nobody could see it; birds flew past, clouds trod on it.
"I'm here!" said Piril. Nobody heard.
The sun noticed it. It came slowly to its side. "Little star, why aren't you sleeping?" "I wanted to see the day. But in the daytime nobody sees me."
The sun smiled. "Let me tell you a secret. I have never seen the night either. When I set, you come out; when you set, I come out. We never see each other. But every evening I hand the sky over to you, and every morning you hand it over to me. That is why the sky is never left in the dark."
Piril thought. "So while I sleep, you keep watch?" "Yes. And you, while I sleep."
Piril yawned. It wrapped itself in a cloud. "All right," it said, "I'm going to sleep. The sky is yours."
The sun said, "The sky is mine."
Now you close your eyes too. The night is not yours; the night belongs to the moon, the stars, the street lamp. They are on watch. You sleep.
The tale ends here. Sleep well.
