In the middle of the ocean a little wave was born. Little waves always want the same thing: to reach the shore. To meet the sand there, make a "shhhh" sound and go back.
The little wave set off. But the ocean was very big. It traveled and traveled; the shore did not appear. It got tired and grew smaller. "I'll never get there," it said.
Just then a huge shadow passed beneath it. An old whale. The whale put out its head: "Why are you crying, little wave?" "I can't reach the shore. It's too far."
The whale smiled. "Let me tell you something. I have been in the ocean for a hundred years. I have never gone to the shore. But I know the ocean's lullaby. Listen."
And the whale sang. A deep, long, soft sound. Ooooo... uuuuu... It echoed under the water. The little wave listened. The song was rocking it. Forward, back. Forward, back.
"What does this song say?" asked the wave. The whale said, "That not every wave has to reach the shore. Some waves rock in the middle of the ocean, and that is beautiful too. The shore isn't going anywhere. Neither are you. Rock."
The little wave rocked. Forward, back. The moon rose, the stars fell into the water. The whale went on singing. Ooooo... uuuuu...
The little wave fell asleep. When it woke in the morning, it was at the shore; the current had carried it during the night. It met the sand, said "shhhh" and went back. It looked for the whale; the whale was far away, spouting water. It was waving hello.
Now you rock too. Forward, back. You don't have to get there; sleep will carry you itself.
The tale ends here. Sleep well.
